What's in? May 2005 - L'Arc-en-Ciel individual interview - hyde

Re: New single “New World”

Q: How did you achieve to compose the song with Yukihiro?

HYDE: We brought up the songs we wrote last year but Yukki didn’t bring it up any so I said to him to write and bring some songs. Then he brought up a song but without lyric. Ken chan created his guitar part for the song and then the song turned like that now. After a while later the song became to be a single, if it would be a single, we thought it needs to be a little bit more commercial.

Q: What was your first impression of this song?

HYDE: I thought it was different from his previous tunes. They were good but I thought if the new song had different chorus, it would be much better... So there’s a credit of my name for this song but I created only its chorus.

Q: Was it easy for you to create that chorus part?

HYDE: No, it wasn’t. I tried several different approaches. At first, I tried changing only some melody, but the other members was not sure that the idea was good, so I asked them for more time. I went into the studio, think over with my guitar. New idea came up to my mind after the producer went back home.

Q: What was the point to create that chorus?

HYDE: I tried to create something nice keeping its good speedy melody, rhythms and the codes.

Q: Yukihiro san wrote this lyric too.

HYDE: I recommended to him to write lyric because he only brought up one song! (Laugh) I want every member to write at least one song for an album. And he wrote only one song without lyric, so naturally, I had to ask him to write its lyric too. (Laugh)

Q: Why did you ask?

HYDE: Because writing lyrics aren’t so easy! (Laugh)

Q: How do you feel singing the words which somebody wrote?

HYDE: It’s fun. Everyone has different thoughts. And the person created the song knows about the song more than me. When I write words for somebody’s song, I poured my feeling but I don’t know the moment or the feeling which the song was created. The creator has more clear visions.

Q: This is the first song yukihiro wrote in Japanese. What did you think when you read it?

HYDE: I was little surprised that he wrote quite honest. I expected something more complicated, but it wasn’t. I found he is so positive.

Q: Both “Killing me” and “New World” sound good at live performance.

HYDE: Each member may had been thinking about live when writing. Many songs in the new album are also sound good at live.

Q: How do you think about songs which lyrics are written by others?

HYDE: If I write all lyrics, those songs will be sound similar so including other members’ lyrics become spices for the album.

Q: I think your vocal get better and better.

HYDE: I don’t know. I sing songs one day before lately before the recording - I didn’t sing even once before. Lyrics are normally completed in early morning. I sing it about 5 times then I go back home and sleep, and record it next day. It reduces silly mistakes, and the quality is better. I know it is generally natural thing, though… (laugh)
